The
Purpose of the Corrections Conference
"The Purpose of the Area 10 Corrections Conference is
to serve, both as an educational tool, and as an exchange of
information, between A.A. members and corrections related-professionals,
as well as those interested in becoming involved in this
rewarding area of service work."
The Area 10 Corrections Conference is a wonderful tradition
that was started over 18 years ago by a handful of very
dedicated members of Alcoholics Anonymous . Some of which
are still going strong, and they have contributed immensely
to this proven program of recovery that we endeavor to
take to the still suffering alcoholic behind the walls.
We are very grateful for their help.

A
brief history of the Area 10 Corrections Conference
The
Colorado Corrections Conferences have provided an opportunity
for information-sharing, fun and fellowship for AA’s who
volunteer to take meetings behind the walls of jails, prisons,
penitentiaries and other lock-up facilities. The history of these
annual conferences began in 1988 under the sponsorship of the
Area 10 Corrections Committee, and anyone interested is invited
to attend. The Corrections Conference Committees have always
done an excellent job of arranging the 3-day weekend events,
which begin with a Friday morning C.D.O.C. training session,
and an AA speaker in the evening. Saturday’s
full day agenda has panels, workshops, sharing sessions and other
presentations, always with time for good meals, an evening gathering
and ice cream social. The conferences conclude Sunday morning
after a speaker meeting and closing report. A highlight of the
conferences has been the inmate panels from the Colorado Department
of Corrections. These men and women have shared their stories
of how they apply the AA Program to their lives while doing time
in prison. And the panels of former inmates have shared their
experience, strength and hope as they continue in recovery on
the outside. Other speakers have included AA volunteers and invited
guests such as judges, attorneys, sheriffs, program directors,
case managers, parole officers, counselors, AA Trustees, and
representatives from the Department of Corrections and Addiction
Recovery Programs, Inc. At each conference, bids are presented
and voted on to determine the location of the next year’s
conference. Many areas of the state have served as hosts; would
your group or district like to participate in a future event?
